Oculus Rift has just announced it will be open for pre-orders January 6, 2016 for $599.00. The new virtual reality headset will ship with the headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, Xbox One Controller and will come with two games, EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale

Expected ship date is June 2016. They had to delay the launch of the new Oculus Controllers to the second half of 2016.

These things look like they will enable gaming to go to a whole new level for sure.

Oculus Hardware Requirements

So appears that your PC’s hardware (required to plug Oculus into) needs to step it up a few notches.

“The goal is for all Rift games and applications to deliver a great experience on this configuration,” Oculus explained. “Ultimately, we believe this will be fundamental to VR’s success, as developers can optimize and tune their game for a known specification, consistently achieving presence and simplifying development.”

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM

Apart from the recommended spec, the Rift will require:

  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via a direct output architecture

I purchased the Gear VR and have to say that was very impressed with the unit, for $150.00. Will post more on that later.

So it appears that the PC is not dead, yet, as desktop makers find a renewal in a dwindling PC market. See some of the PC’s that are Oculus ready:

What do you think, will you drop over $600.00 on the first pro-gaming Virtual Reality headset?
