Windows 10 New “Free Up Space” Tool for Cleaning Up Your Hard Drive

Free Up Space Tool

Windows 10 has recently launched an easy-to-use tool for freeing up disk space on your computer. It removes temporary files, system logs, previous Windows installations, and other files that are taking up space. This is an updated version to the previous Disk Cleanup tool that you accessed via the hard drive.

NOTE: this updated tool is only available with the latest April 2018 build for Windows 10 that is not open to everybody, yet. To register for Insiders, go here https://insider.windows.com

What Version of Windows 1o do you have?

To find out what version of Windows 10 you have, go to Settings (you can just click the Windows button on your keyboard and start typing ‘settings‘ or any other command or program), then scroll down to About, then look under Version.

To access the Disk Cleanup Tool, go to Settings -> Storage -> select Free up space now

The system will scan your drive for space freeing opportunities. Only some are selected, so make sure you really want to delete the files that are selected. You can de-select or scroll down and search for more options. One example was an old version of Windows I had on my machine that was chewing up 29 GB of space!

Interesting, it didn’t seem any faster, but this could be that it was deleting the old Windows installation.
